Jocks, Freaks, and Nerds (The Ford, Massachusetts, 1970s)

The jocks played
high school helmet-ball.
They dubbed the others
freaks
and nerds.

A crowd always cheered
when their helmets appeared
stuck to wide-shoulders
and feet
stuffed in cleats,

while just down the road
in a damp garage,
a band of freaks
kicked off
their set of covers

and nerds
in the library
dreamt up worlds
to put an end
to pigeonholes.
